Side channels are important for fish

It is not just the main channels of rivers which need looking after. LOCAR research showed that side channels are very important for biodiversity and have different flow, sediment, vegetation and temperature. Radio tags allowed us to track fish as they move along and between different channels. LOCAR scientists found that different fish use different types of channel as refuges and for spawning, moving from one type of channel to another at different times of year and as water levels and flow rates change.
