Agricultural chemicals will pollute rivers for years to come

A new LOCAR catchment model shows how river pollution will respond to changes in the application of agricultural chemicals.

Unless there are drastic reductions to the amount of chemicals applied, LOCAR found that some rivers will routinely exceed safe drinking water limits by 2020 and groundwater nitrate will continue to increase for the next 70-80 years. And even if there are reductions now, agricultural and other chemicals already in the groundwater will continue to leach into rivers for several decades
